HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

ELKA was designed by Major A M Bellingham and built by Charles Cooper Yacht Builders Ltd. Conyer Wharf, Teynham, Kent and launched as GANNET in 1936.

Not much is known about her early history until the 1950s when she was owned by F M Owner CBE of Penfoye, Lostwithiel, Cornwall and registered in Fowey as ELKA, official number 186979.

During the 1960s Dr Edward Holman of Cornerways, Ringwood owned ELKA, mooring her at Keyhaven, Hampshire. In the 1970s Albert Brewer of North Baddesley, Southampton was registered owner keeping the vessel on the River Hamble. John Liverage of Greenacres, Birdham owned ELKA in the 1980s mooring her in Birdham Pool. The current owner bought the vessel in 1992. A professional restoration began in 1997, completed in 2005 which included hull re-planking and caulking, new decks and main bulkhead, new standing rigging, new running rigging, new engine with new bearers, all steel floors shot blasted and hot dip galvanised, all cast-iron fittings shot blasted and re-galvanised.

Pitch-pine carvel planked hull on steam bent oak timbers, copper nail and rove fastened. Sheathed marine-ply decks. Mahogany cabin and cockpit coamings, Pitch-pine rubbing strakes and toe rails.

Attractive lines with Albert Strange influences, have spoon bow, canoe stern, long sweeping sheer, round bilges, long lead ballast keel.

Traditional mahogany fitted interior offering four berths in two cabins.

Saloon with port and starboard settee berths. Navigation table, six lockers under the side decks and six lockers under the berths. Saloon table, galley area.

Fore Cabin with provision for two berths, sail stowage, heads with black water tank and access to chain locker.

Aft Cockpit with mahogany joinery, tiller steering and access to stern lazarette.

BERMUDIAN CUTTER RIG - sets about 480 sq.ft. plain sail. Deck stepped timber mast with double spreaders. Timber boom and bowsprit. New running and standing rigging and bottle-screws in 2005. Mains sail, two jibs and Yankee jib. Canvas boom/mainsail cover.

20hp YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE - 2GM20F fitted new in 2005, approx. 300 hours only. Constant velocity gearbox installed new in 2005, new prop shaft, cutlass bearing and propeller.
