HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

Slipper Stern launches are a traditional River Thames pleasure boat normally of mahogany construction to seat between four and eight passengers. These popular launches began to be more widely introduced in the 1930s with classical designs from Meakes of Marlow, Brooke Marine of Oulton Broad and Andrews of Bourne End. The protoytpe, Merk, however, was built some years earlier in 1912 by Andrews at Maidenhead. This boat, now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum was owned at one time by Arthur Whitten-Brown, famous with John Allcock for the first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919. Slipper launches have also been owned by other celebrities, including one by the British 1950's singing trio, the Beverley Sisters and another by Louis Renault, of car company fame. The successful slipper stern design continued during the 1950's. The early pre-war boats are now a design icon, the E-Type Jaguar of the river and as such are much sought after.

Elysian was purchased by the current owner in July 2004 from Peter Freebody at Hurley, where maintenance work was undertaken whilst moored / wintered at the yard until April 2013.

Revarnishing of the decks and hull repainted Aug 2013. New epoxy resin and sheathed bottom using Robbins Super Elite plywood Dennetts Boatbuilders April 2013.

Boat safety certificate renewed to Aug 2016 (two new fire extinguishers installed at that date). New carpets and cushions. New steering wheel, column and gear lever. New electrics and Smiths electrical instruments (Cream background, black print and needles). New Sunbrella pram hood with detachable side panels. New full length Sunbrella cover with hoop supports. Ground up engine rebuild including conversion to unleaded fuel. Gearbox re-built September 2013.

Mahogany planked topsides, laid decks in obeche and mahogany. Varnished mahogany interior joinery.

50hp Watermota 'SEA TIGER' four cylinder petrol engine, circa 1955. Fully serviced April 2014. Re-built gearbox, shaft driven bronze propeller. 50 litres fuel capacity. 12 volt starting battery.

Approx 20 knots top speed.

BROKERS NOTE:

A particularly fine example of the ever popular slipper stern launch, so reminiscent of lazy Summer days on the river and strawberry teas at Henley. Elysian has been the subject of a complete over-haul with much expenditure over recent years. She must be one of the best examples of her type available in ready to go condition to be enjoyed for the rest of the season.
