HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

Preliminary Details:

ISLANDA is an exceptionally rare and astonishingly original 'Brown Owl' Class Motor-Sailer built for Robert Barr junior of Hermiston, Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire in 1934 to a John Bain design by Silvers of Rosneath. Original launched as Islander she was re-named in 1935 and registered in Greenock, official number 163756. Originally ketch rigged with 401 square feet steading sails.

G E Woods-Humphreys CBE of St John's Wood, London became the second registered owner before ISLANDA was requisitioned by H M Government, most likely for coastal patrol. After the war Sir Geoffrey Burton of Wasperton House, Warwick acquired the vessel moving her to a mooring in Southampton. Sir Geoffrey at the time also owner of the Camper & Nicholson 50 Ton Schooner HOSHI.

In the mid 1950s Captain L W Cox MC purchased ISLANDA his address at the time The Royal Motor Yacht Club, Sandbanks, Poole. In 1960 Mr & Mrs W Graeme-Lines of Cudworth Manor, Newdigate, Surrey bought the vessel and moved her to Chichester. They changed the registry to Jersey and replaced the original Gleniffer oil engines with a pair of 80hp Lister Blackstone diesels which are still giving good service.

Ian Paterson of The Vale, Chelsea became the next owner taking ISLANDA on to the River Hamble, where she remained through the 1970s and 1980s until sold to Jeremy Wheeler of Winchester in 1989. Keith Ross of Thames Quay, Chelsea Harbour took over ownership in 1995 followed by the current owner in February 1997. ISLANDA is still Part One Registered in Jersey.

The 'Brown Owl' Class is possibly the most desirable of all the motor-yacht designs produced by Silvers in-house designer John Bain. A purposeful and capable sea-going, auxiliary motor-yacht of immense style and distinction with a lovely canoe stern. ISLANDA has been fortunate in having a succession of dedicated and careful owners with the means to maintain her to a high standard. The interior has a wonderful ambience evoking the style of the 1930s. The period engines add to the charm of this special boat.
