HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

The legendary David Hillyard needs little introduction as one of the most successful wooden boat-builders of the twentieth century, producing a staggering eight hundred boats from two-half tonners to large ocean-going schooners. The yard on the River Arun in Littlehampton, established in the 1920s was soon recognised for producing traditional, well-built family cruising yachts for a reasonable price.

The standard 'Six-Tonners' were built in reasonable large numbers post-war until the 1960s and mostly feature a centre cockpit and canoe stern. A number were built with an aft cockpit which provided a good ten-foot long main saloon, a feature which appealed to Arthur Ransom in one of his last boats built by Hillyards, LOTTIE BLOSSOM 11. The six-tonner design offers roomy accommodation for four with a weatherly sailing performance and classic styling.

MALINA was built for Brigadier Ralph Emerson Pickering CBE of the Queens Royal Regiment in 1955 to the aft cockpit design. After a few seasons sailing Douglas Southam-Cottell bought MALINA moving her from Littlehampton to a River Hamble mooring. Dr Roland Cox became the next registered owner followed in 1962 by Mr & Mrs R A Pitt of Wilmslow, Cheshire. The current owner bought MALINA in 2008 after a full survey. Recommendations from that survey have mostly been completed and MALINA is in commission and ready to sail from her South Coast marina mooring.
