HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

The 'Spartan' One Design dates from the mid 1950's and was conceived by the well known naval architect Alan Buchanan, the first example built by Harry King of Pin Mill and launched in 1956. The early design or Class One have a conventional sheer and coach-roof with the later Class Two Spartans having the same hull but with a modified coach-roof and sheer.

In all about fifty Spartans were built, a good number by Priors of Burnham.  The design carries a fractional rig with a ballast keel of 3,400lbs.

Traditional clinker planked mahogany hull on steamed oak timbers, all copper fastened. Epoxy sheathed marine ply deck, mahogany coach-roof coamings, cockpit and joinery.

Four berths in cosy cabin layout with galley and heads.

Port & Starboard saloon settee / berths, two quarter berths.

Dolphin 12hp two cylinder, direct-drive petrol engine.

BROKERS NOTE:

The Spartan Class, similar to the Stella OD, are an attractive masthead sloop offering traditional long-keel lines with strong lapstrake construction.  This example, now in need of some cosmetic attention is offered at a realistic guide price to allow for updating and improvement but is basically in commission and ready to sail this Summer.
