HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

The Sterling Class dates from the late 1950s and is considered the cruising version of the famous Twister Class, although with a slightly larger volume interior. Both are legendary designs from the board of Kim Holman. The Sterling Class, of which ninteen were built in total were constructed by Jack Upham of Brixham, Devon.

Sterlet, built for Dr Thomas Stratton of Fordingbridge in 1961 by J W Upham, is one of the early examples and has been maintained in exemplary condition. She originally sailed under RORC sail number 15 from her home port of Poole. In the early 1970s Mr & Mrs D H Graham-Weall of Parsons Pool House, Shaftesbury became the second owners, and registered Sterlet, Port of Registry Poole, official number 340030. Sterlet remained in their ownership, stationed in Poole through the 1970s and 1980s. In the current ownership Sterlet has been extensively cruised mostly on the South Coast and Solent. In 1999 a comprehensive refit was undertaken by Dolphin Quay Boatyard at Emsworth resulting in one of the best examples in her class.

Carvel splined mahogany topsides and caulked pitch-pine below the waterline. Sheathed marine-ply decks (re-finished in 2011), varnished mahogany superstructure, cockpit and toe-rails. Iron ballast keel with steel keel bolts. Keel bolts replaced in 1999, three drawn, one replaced in 2011, four drawn, three replaced in 2015. All bronze hull fastenings replaced in 1999. Topsides re-splined in 1999.

Traditional style accommodation for five/six with teak joinery and white enamel panelling. Two berth fore cabin, three berth saloon and quarter berth. Self draining cockpit with tiller steering.

Chart table, hanging lockers, Eberspacher heating, Cloth upholstery. Plastimo gimballed cooker, Frigoboat keel cooled fridge. Stereo, Jabsco manual heads.

Deck Stepped Alloy mast with varnished wooden boom. Standing rigging replaced in 2011, stainless steel chainplates in 1999. Sails by Arun & Rockall. Roller furling genoa and gennaker. Slab reefing main with lazy jacks and stack pack system. Mainsail and gennaker new 2002. Genoa new 2013.
