HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

Woodpecker was designed by the legendary Jack Laurent-Giles for A A Hall Esq. of West Port Lodge, Cricket St. Thomas, Somerset and built in 1948 by the well known yacht yard of R A Newman of Poole, Dorset. Woodpecker remained in the Hall family until the late 1960s, ownership transferring to Major T A Hall of Chislehampton House, Stadhampton, Oxfordshire in 1963. Eric & Sybil Farmer from Solihull became the next registered owners before selling her to Mr & Mrs R Vernon of Little Hampden Lodge, Great Missenden. The Vernons being members of the Royal Solent Y C, Royal Naval Sailing Association and R N V R. Under the next new ownership she was stationed in Wootton Creek, Isle of Wight whereas previously she had remained in Poole from the time of building. In the 1980s and 90s Woodpecker was available for charter on the East Coast of the United States. Later under new French ownership she was moved to France where a meticulous restoration began in 1999. A two year complete re-fit at Chantier Naval de Sanary les Baux brought Woodpecker to an exemplary finish. In the present ownership further work has been undertaken to exacting standards including a new swept teak-laid deck in 2016 at Manoel Island Shipyard in Malta.

Woodpecker is constructed of  Honduras Mahogany, double diagonally planked and finished with glass sheathing painted in Royal Blue Awlgrip enamel. External brightwork re-finished in 2016 with up to ten coats of Epifanes varnish. Gunwales, and exterior superstructure finished in Oyster White Awlgrip enamel. New teak laid decks fitted in 2016. Varnished teak hatches, cappings and trim maintain a traditional classic look.
