HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
The Skerry Cruiser is Sweden´s contribution to the world of sailing. They are a fast and elegant racing yacht of which over 1200 have been built since the advent of the rule in 1908.

The rule of the Square Metre Yachts was applied by the Swedish Sailing Association in 1908 and revised in 1925. A boat design suited for racing as well as pleasure was required for the Swedish skerries by combining a suitable interior space with a significant sail area. The class rule is a construction rule where all boats have their individual design but the sail area is limited and defines the size of the individual boat.

The Undell Class was developed by the Chicago Yacht Club as a one-design 22 Square Metre. The boat was designed by Knud Reimers in 1953 in hopes of reducing the galloping prices of new boats. PATRIOT was built at the respected Kungsor Boatyard, Sweden.

Eleven boats were built. PATRIOT is number U5. The design with long overhangs and low freeboard are distinct features associated with the square meters.

Built in 1961, with the Yard number U-5,(S-333) for Byron Morril of Chicago and originally named GLADYS she was renamed VALKIRIE in 1964 and PATRIOT in 2003. Fully restored to racing specification at Mashfords Boat Yard, Plymouth in 2010. Raced in class in Sweden later that year.

  • Peter McKinney M.D. 1976-1978
