SOLWAY MAID – HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
The legendary genius William Fife needs no introduction in the classic yacht world as probably the last designer to combine both stunningly beautiful lines with tremendous racing capabilities. SOLWAY MAID was the last true Fife from the Fairlie yard built by master craftsmen under the watchful eye of William Fife 111.
William Fife (junior) 1857-1944 was the third generation of Scottish boat builders and designs. William inherited a rich legacy from his father in 1902 but soon established his own reputation as a top designer of over 600 yachts including two Americas Cup contenders. He adopted the Chinese dragon as his trademark and his yachts are still easily recognised by this symbol.
Construction of SOLWAY MAID began in 1938, completed in 1940 she was laid up for the duration until 1945. Her original owner was the well-known yachtsman F Ivan Carr of Carlisle where he ran a successful flour mill. Ivan sailed SOLWAY MAID extensively in Scottish waters until his death in 1974, whereupon Marjorie Carr retained ownership until 1988. An extensive two-year refit was completed in 2013 and SOLWAY MAID returned to the Med. racing circuit where she is a formidable competitor.
