HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
The Thames Bawley Class was another successful shoal-draught design from the board of Maurice Griffiths. This sturdy family boat designed on traditional lines has moderate overhangs bow and stern, a long straight keel with a hull shape influenced by the local fishing Bawleys of the Essex Coast.
The Thames Bawley is designed and built to stand up to the worst East Coast conditions and the short steep seas of the Thames Estuary and elsewhere. With her moderate draught the Bawley can explore creeks and estuaries and can take the ground without anxiety.
Underway she will sail herself with the helm lashed or lie quietly hove-to under most combinations of sail. The full width cabin allows plenty of working deck space whilst giving spacious below decks accommodation for up to four people with 6ft 2ins headroom under the doghouse and 5ft 4ins forward.
Planking is in mahogany, copper fastened to rock elm timbers. Fifteen galvanised iron knees secure the deck beams and shelves. Wide iroko floors take the bolts of the 1.6 ton iron ballast keel.
Ruddy Duck , ex: Naupilus was built for K H Arnold of Great Wakering, he stationed her at Burnham on Crouch and was a member of the Royal Burnham Y C. In 1965 she was sold to H A Stobbs of Battle, Sussex. He moved Ruddy Duck to Newhaven where she remained in his ownership until 1973 when H P Wybenga of Leeuwarden, Holland acquired her. The registry lapsed after this date. The current owner bought Ruddy Duck seven years ago and has set about upgrading the vessel including a full engine re-build in 2011.

Mast head bermudian rig. Deck stepped with timber mast and spars. Stainless-steel standing rigging. Main-sail 2003, furling head-sail 1998. Setting about 335 plain sail. Two shhet winches. Original wooden whisker pole.
20hp Bukh diesel auxiliary, about 1980, fully re-built in April 2011, 10 hours running only since. Two blade propeller. Tiller steering. Two batteries. 7 gallon fuel tank.
